The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the residences of senior Congress leader and former Union finance minister under the UPA government P Chidambaram and his son Karti regarding a money laundering controversy according to Times Now and CNN News. The raids have to do with the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearances given to INX Media for news channel News X. The raids were carried out in Chennai, Delhi, Gurgaon and many other places in the country. Many leaders have rushed to his defence like Congress leader K R Ramasamy who said, “Chidambaram has done nothing wrong, these raids are politically motivated” and another Congress leader Karate R. Thiagarajan said, “They just want to damage P Chidambaram’s reputation because he is a voice against Modi Govt.” In his first reaction, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy said, “ED can conduct the case under FEMA; CBI has registered a FIR. PMLA is a criminal act.” P Chidambaram too reacted and said that he is being targetted by the government deliberately. However, Swamy added to his statement by telling Times Now, “Chidambaram has to be in jail.” Swamy said the former FM had given Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval which was illegal according to the rules and law. He added, “Once these illegal approvals were given, then Karti went and collected and in the process in 18 countries he has bank accounts, properties and houses.” He also added, “Recently I was in London. I found he has two big houses in City of Cambridge in their own names. So, there was no other alternative but to find what evidences are in his houses and other places,” he said.

“FIPB approval is granted in hundreds of cases. The five Secretaries who constitute the FIPB, the officials of the FIPB Secretariat and the competent authority in each case are the public officials. There is no allegation against any of them. There is no allegation against me.
Every case was processed according to law and approval was granted or refused in accordance with the recommendations of the FIBP consisting of five Secretaries to the Government of India.
The government, using the CBI and other agencies, is targeting my son and his friends. The government’s aim is to silence my voice and stop me from writing, as it has tried to do in the cases of leaders of Opposition parties, journalists, columnists, NGOs and civil society organizations. All I will say is, I shall continue to speak and write.“
