Earlier the main accused was arrested on Sunday following a video purportedly showing two women being molested by a group of 14 men surfaced on social media and sparked outrage. According to reports, the incident took place on May 22. UP Police had formed a four-member committee to nab the perpetrators. The Yogi Adityanath government has received flak from several quarters over the incident. Police had registered a case against 14 men. In the shocking video, the accused were seen waylaying two girls in a desolate village area of Tanda town in Rampur district. “An FIR has been lodged against 14 persons. The main accused Shahnawaz has been arrested and the police probe is on,” Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar was quoted as saying by PTI. He said no one has yet approached the police which has registered an FIR on its own.
Kumar had said that accused were identified as Shahnawaj, Nawved, Farmaan, Jahane Aalam and Saddam are of Kuwakhera village of Rampur district. “Attempts are on to nab the other accused,” he said.
Meanwhile, a political slugfest has erupted over the issue with Congress targeting the ruling BJP government over its pre-poll promise of implementing an effective law-and-order mechanism in the state. Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan had stoked a controversy by saying that under the CM Yogi Adityanath-led government, men should try and keep their women indoors. Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma has rejected the allegations saying that upholding the dignity of women is of utmost importance for the Yogi Adityanath Government. He also said that there is no place for anti-social elements who disrespect women in the state. Sharma assured that the state government is doing everything to ensure the safety of women.
