Raksha Bandhan is one festival when the market is loaded with colourful threads that are known as Rakhis. The Rakhis would range from cartoon rakhis to shiny rakhis. Moreover, sisters across India would be choosing the best rakhi for their brothers. The festival with all this happiness and joy also brings with it jobs. Amidst the hustle-bustle during Rakshabandhan, in the Alwar city of Rajasthan, the festival gives employment to around ten thousand women throughout the year. As per Dainik Bhaskar report, these women have a totally different meaning of the festival. They believe that the festival stands for the protection of one’s family. The rakhis that are made by these women are exported to 24 countries around the world by selling the bracelet they get a yearly turnover of 10 crores.
As per the report, Rakhi dealers say that over 40,000 designs have been submitted to the city out which around 30,000 designs can be found with the famous rakhi traders of Alwar. They added that 1,000 new designs of Rakhi are introduced every year. Women work closely with the experts to make these designs. Some traders even host Rakhi making competitions in various villages to get the best designs. This year, these women have managed to make new ‘chudda rakhis’ too.
According to the dealers, the price of these rakhis ranges from Rs 2 to Rs 200. Although designs that are sold in the country and on foreign lands the expensive rakhis are more common among the tourists.
