Former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin on Saturday walke out of jail after 11 years. The Patna High Court granted him bail in the controversial Rajiv Roshan case.  Shahabuddin was found guilty in 2004 for kidnapping of brothers Girish Raj and Satish Raj, giving them “an acid bath” and then murdering them. While Shahabuddin’s son Osama was charged for killing of a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Rajiv Roshan, who was a witness in the case.
After walking free, Shahabuddin said, he was framed and it was the Court that had jailed him and has now released him as well.

“This has nothing to do with politics. Judiciary has its own procedures. We all know I was framed. But it was Court who jailed me, Court has released me,” said the former Bihar MP.

Roshan was the main witness in August 2004 murder case of his two younger brothers. He was shot dead three days before he was to record is statement in the murder case of his brothers Girish Raj and Satish Raj.

Celebrations erupted at Shahbuddin’s native village in Bihar’s Siwan district after his release was announced. Shahabuddin’s wife Hina Sahab told the media in Siwan that she had been waiting for his release since 2003.

“I have faith in God and ultimately justice has been done to him; he will be released on bail now,” she said.

Shahabuddin was a criminal-turned-politician who at one time ran a virtual parallel administration in Siwan, settling family and land disputes, fixing doctors’ consultancy fees and presiding over even marital disputes. There are more than 30 criminal cases pending against him, which include eight of murder, 20 of attempted murder and kidnapping etc Besides these police-registered cases, many other were unreported, which include a large number of “disappearances” from Siwan. In May 2007, he was convicted of the abduction of the trader and CPI(ML) worker, Chhote Lal Gupta, in February 1999. He has been convicted in a number of other criminal cases, including a 10 years rigorous imprisonment for attempted murder on the then Superintendent of Police, SK Singhal, in 1996.

He has been winning the Lok Sabha elections from siwan since 1996. In May 2007, when he was found guilty in a case for abducting with intent to murder, he was debarred from contesting polls. Later in 2009, RJD chose his wife Hina from the constituency to fight the elections. However she was defeated by Om Prakash Yadav.

Shahabuddin’s supporters, including over a dozen ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal legislators and former ministers are expected to organize a grand welcome for Shahbuddin. “We will arrange a rare welcome on his release from jail,” RJD legislator Gridhari Yadav claimed on his Facebook wall on Friday.

Meanwhile, BJP on Friday alleged that the Bihar government in a systematic manner paved the way for the release of RJD strongman Mohammad Shahabuddin from jail. “The state government in a systematic manner paved the way for release of Mohammad Shahabuddin, who is part of the RJD top policy-making body, from jail,” said senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi.

“Will Shahabuddin, a symbol of ‘jungle raj’ of the past, share dias with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD president Lalu Prasad? The way Shahabuddin sustained his rein of terror in Siwan despite being behind the bars, the very news of his coming out of jail is instilling fear among citizens” added Sushil.

Shahabuddin was viewed by most people in Siwan as a figure of terror. Few dared to oppose him. Some who did in elections ended up dead, increasing his reputation as a man who could not be meddled with.
