Rajasthan bypolls results: Taking an unassailable lead in the Rajasthan bypolls, the Congress today gave a massive blow to the ruling BJP in the state. The Congress snatched away the votes in many parts where seats were won by the BJP in 2014. Coming out with his own explanation, Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi– head of the group which protested against the movie Padmaavat– said it was for the first time that in Rajasthan ByPolls candidates from ruling party didn’t win. Maintaining that the state government was itself responsible for the loss, Kalvi said people were outraged as Padmaavat was not banned. The Karni Sena chief said, “Padmaavat was not banned so it took the shape of outrage which was evident on 29th January and its result came today.” Kalvi has again suggested PM Narendra Modi to ban the movie saying it is the only solution.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has also hailed his party’s Rajasthan unit for its impressive show in the bypolls for two Lok Sabha and one Assembly seats, calling the outcome a “rejection” of the BJP by the people. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said he was proud of each of the partymen in the state, currently under the BJP’s rule. “Well done Rajasthan Congress! Proud of each and every one of you. This is a rejection of the BJP by the people of Rajasthan. #RajasthanByPolls,” Gandhi tweeted.

As per latest reports, Chief Electoral Officer Govind Sharma said Karan Singh Yadav and Raghu Sharma were leading their nearest rivals Jaswant Yadav and Ram Swaroop Lamba by over 1.94 lakh and 80,455 votes in the by-poll for Alwar and Ajmer seats respectively.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat High Court today deferred until Wednesday the hearing on a plea by ‘Padmaavat’ producers seeking a direction to the state government to provide adequate police protection to theatres after fringe Rajput groups protested violently against the controversial film.

Justice J B Pardiwala deferred the hearing after the petitioner – Viacom 18 Media Private Limited – sought time till Monday to submit additional information before the court. The government had sought the hearing to be adjourned till Wednesday. The court agreed with the government’s request.
