Railways case: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav in the Railways irregularities case. While Lalu has been asked to appear on September 11, Tejashwi who is also the leader of Opposition in the state, has been summoned for September 12. CBI had filed a FIR in the case on July 7, 2017, alleging that irregularities were carried out by Lalu Yadav when he was railway minister in 2006. On the same day, CBI had also raided 12 locations linked to Lalu and his family members including in Patna, New Delhi, Ranchi and Gurgaon.

Lalu was alleged to have carried out irregularities in the tender for development, maintenance and operation of BNR Hotels in Ranchi and Puri, awarded to the private Sujata Hotels in 2006, PTI reported. The BNR Hotels are heritage hotels of the Indian Railways which were taken over by the IRCTC from Indian Railways earlier in 2006. CBI also accused that Lalu had received 3 acres of land in exchange for awarding the tender to a private company.

Apart from Lalu Yadav and his son Tejashwi, former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi, the then IRCTC MD, P K Goyal, the wife of Yadav’s confidante Prem Chand Gupta, Sarla, and others are also accused in the case.

The CBI had also booked former Managing Director, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) P K Goel, Sujata, wife of Yadav’s confidante Prem Chand Gupta, two directors of a private company, have also been booked by CBI in connection with the case, among others.

Earlier this year, BJP leader and now Bihar deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi had revealed that two railways hotels had been allotted in contravention of tender norms and at throwaway prices. Modi had alleged that the beneficiary had transferred precious plots at Patna where a big mall has been coming up via RJD MP Prem Chand Gupta.
