Navjot Singh Sidhu, the cricketer turned politician’s new Awaaz-e-Punjab forum seems to have been divided way before the elections. Independent MLA Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjeet Singh Bains are reported to have met Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and reportedly sealed and alliance with the party for the upcoming state assembly elections in early 2017. This new development comes after days of private meeting with Awaaz-e-Punjab leaders and the representatives of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Durgesh Pathak, AAP organisation-building head confirmed to HT that an alliance had been sealed and an invitation for a press conference had also been sent out. If the reports are true then this leaves the former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, both of whom had left the BJP earlier this year and former Indian Hockey captain Pargat Singh, who had broken off from the SAD, stranded with Congress being the only viable option at the point.
Navjot Singh Sidhu had earlier clarified that his forum will not become a party and contest the elections independently. Earlier this year, Sidhu and his wife had left the BJp after an ugly public spat. Sidhu and his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu had accused the BJP leadership of not giving them complete freedom to express their opinions. Sidhu had then met with AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and even that meeting had not panned out well. The forum, that had been launched in September, had spoken openly about being allies with non-Akali and non-Congress outfits. Sidhu had also criticised Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and said that he run the AAP like a dictator. He had said that Kejriwal wanted “yes men”.
