Pune (PMC) Municipal Election Results 2026 Highlights: The BJP performed very well in the civic elections on Friday in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. They defeated their opponents, including the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and NCP (SP) and kept control of both municipal corporations. The party also registered a win in other parts of western Maharashtra, like Solapur, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur.
As per latest updates, results for 135 of the 165 seats in Pune had been declared. The Congress received 15 votes, whereas the BJP got 95. The NCP bagged 20 seats and the NCP (SP) won two.
The BJP also kept its control of the nearby industrial city Pimpri Chinchwad by winning 84 of 127 seats. As per the official results, the NCP headed by Ajit Pawar was placed in second position with 36 seats, as per PTI. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP had contested the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad corporation elections jointly, but the tie-up struggled to bring their divided support base under one umbrella.
Polling for the PMC elections ended at 5:30 pm on January 15, with the State Election Commission (SEC) recording Pune’s voter turnout of 36.95 till 5:30 pm. After the voting was concluded, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare told to PTI that the statewide turnout was in the 46-50% range and that it was higher in comparison to 2017 civic polls.
Counting begins at 10 am on January 16
The focus now shifts to counting, with the SEC mentioning that result for Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and 27 other civic bodies will be declared on January 16, and vote counting commenced at 10 am on Friday.
High-stake PMC contest
The PMC election saw 1,165 candidates vying for 165 seats across 41 wards, according to PTI. In a significant local realignment, both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party—led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar—forged a tactical alliance to consolidate their stronghold. Conversely, the BJP is contesting the polls independently, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena also went solo after pre-poll negotiations with the BJP reached an impasse.
In the 2017 PMC election, the BJP bagged 97 seats, followed by the NCP with 39, Congress with nine, and Shiv Sena with 10, as per data reported by The Indian Express.
