Section 144 has been imposed in the city of Agartala after supporters of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, a tribal party, created a law and order situation, in demand of a separate tribal state ‘Twipra Land’. As per the news agency ANI, the supporters of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), along with the local residents, created a rampage in the city demanding separate tribal state. The IPFT supporters first carried out a rally in demand of a different state, which later led to a law and order problem, prompting the authorities to impose Sec 144 in the city.

Additional Central paramilitary forces have also been deployed in the city to control the situation. “Some incident of violence and loss of property has happened in Agartala town. Our 1st priority is to maintain law & order, proper enquiry will happen & culprits will be booked to justice,” a senior police official was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

News agency PTI reported that at least 17 people were injured in clashes between supporters and activists of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and local residents. The ruling Communist Party of India(Marxist) has condemned the activities of IPFT supporters and alleged that the group is attempting to destablise the state by disrupting the communal harmony of the state. “IPFT is trying to disrupt the communal harmony since long. Today’s incident was a preplanned and aimed at breaking the communal harmony and peace in the state. We appeal to all to maintain peace and calm,” the party said in a statement.
