Well, this kind of incidents may be frequent in the west but not an everyday affair in the country of 1.25 billion population. An 18 year old girl delivered a baby in a hospital at Kochi following which the Kochi police have registered a case against a 12 year old boy.
According to police the hospital has violated provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The police added that the girl is still 2 months short of turning 18 and the hospital authorities should have contacted the police before operating on the girl. The hospital on the other hand have said that it informed the Childline immediately after it came to know that the girl was made pregnant by a 12-year-old. It also sent all files related to the case to the childline.
The hospital’s version have been backed by the officials at Child Welfare Commission. The director said that the commission had followed the norms and informed the ACP of Thrikkakara about the incident on November 2.
Parents denied responsibility:
In the meantime, the parents of the girl have said that they won’t be able to take care of the new born baby and they have handed over the newborn to the Child Welfare Commission. According to Section 18 of the POCSO Act, the police should have been informed immediately about the girl.
What remains to be seen is if the girl was pregnant for the past 9 months why wasn’t the case reported then!
