Pranab Mukherjee farewell in Parliament: With just a day left for the end of his tenure, Parliament yesterday bid farewell to President Pranab Mukherjee. Members of both the Houses gathered in the Parliament to convey their regards to the outgoing President. Speaking during the event, President apprecaited the organisation of the farewell in his honour. He thanked the Speaker and Chairman and members of both the houses. Overcome by emotion, President Pranab Mukherjee said, “Parliament created my political outlook and persona.”
President Mukherjee said he was also blessed by the fact that he could interact and be associated with a number of luminaries who made the Indian Parliament rich and vibrant. Among these names he mentioned were, Piloo Mody, Hiren Mukherjee, Manmohan Singh, LK Advani and Sonia Gandhi. He added, “Self correction is always a better option and that is something I learned from Indira Gandhi.” He added, “PV Narasimha Rao, Atal Behari Vajpayee enriched my parliamentary experience, and LK Advani gave me mature advice.”
“If I claim I am the creation of this Parliament, perhaps it will not be treated as immodesty,” President Pranab Mukherjee was quoted as saying in his address.
Talking about the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was launched by the government on July 1, the President said it showed the maturity of the Parliament, “Recent passage of GST and its launch on July 1 is shining example of cooperative federalism and speaks volumes for maturity of India’s Parliament”, ANI quoted Pranab Mukherjee in his speech.

In his concluding remark, President Mukherjee added a warning, “It is unfortunate that parliamentary time devoted to legislations has been declining.”
