PM Narendra Modi’s review meet on MFN status to Pakistan postponed, to be held next week

The meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to Pakistan has been postponed till next week.

The meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to Pakistan has been postponed till next week. The meetimg was supposed to happen at 11 AM today but now will be held next week. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and Commerce Ministry were likely to attend the meeting. PM Modi is chairing the CCS meeting on situation along LoC which could be the reason for the MFN review meet to get postponed.

Earlier this week, PM Modi had called a meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to weigh India’s options on trade-related relations with Pakistan. The decision to review the MFN status comes close on the heels of a meeting called by the Prime Minister on the Indus Waters Treaty. At the meeting, PM Modi had said, “Blood and water cannot flow together”, alluding to the recent Uri attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.

The MFN status was accorded in 1996 under WTO’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Both India and Pakistan are signatories to this which mean they have to treat each other and rest of WTO member countries as favored trading partners.
