Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed sadness over the loss of lives in Italy due to an earthquake.

“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a quake in Italy. Condolences to bereaved families & prayers with those injured,” he tweeted.

A powerful earthquake that rocked central Italy today left 38 people dead. The toll was likely to rise, the country’s civil protection unit said in the first official death toll.

“There are still so many people under masonry, so many missing,” said Immacolata Postiglione, the head of the unit’s emergency department.
