It was a brave attempt by the victim to stand up for Swachh Bharat mission that has been promoted by PM Modi. According to the report, the Prime Minister also directed the authorities to punish the culprits. Earlier in the day, Union cabinet minister Venkaiah Naidu had asked the Delhi police to take strict action against the culprits involved in the killing of the driver.
In a tweet, Naidu had said, “Sad that an e-rickshaw driver was beaten to death for stopping two people from urinating in public in Delhi. He was promoting Swachh Bharat”. Naidu informed the media that he had spoken with the Police Commissioner of Delhi, Amulya Patnaik and had asked him to take the strongest possible action against the culprits. Earlier on Saturday, a 32-year-old e-rickshaw driver had been beaten to death by several men when he had objected to two of them urinating outside the GTB Nagar Metro station.
Pm Modi, who is currently on a 4 nation tour is also reported to have sanctioned Rs 1 lakh from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund (PMNRF) as exgratia to the kin of the deceased. An official spokesperson told PTI, “the Prime Minister condemned the incident and directed the authorities to bring to book and punish the culprits for committing such inhuman act”. According to PTI, two men had allegedly bought liquor from a shop near the metro station and consumed it near Gate no 4, after which they had proceeded to urinate outside the metro, to which Kumar had objected. The men had warned Kumar that they would be back and at around 8 pm and had returned with 10 others and attacked him. He had been rushed to a hospital, where he had lost his life.
