Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has attacked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks on the "cow protectors."
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on ‘gau rakshaks’, saying he was sleeping like ‘Kumbhkarna’ when Muslims and Dalits were being attacked by cow vigilantes across the country for the last two years. “Gau rakshaks were attacking Dalits and Muslims for the last two years but PM Modi was sleeping like ‘Kumbhkarna’. Now he has woken up because UP Assembly elections are near,” she said. Mayawati said the cow-vigilante groups were active only in states ruled by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). She also questioned the Prime Minster as to why such statements are issued outside the Parliament where the Opposition has no scope of cross-questioning him.
Mayawati said the PM has maintained a silence on the matter and has not given any instructions as to how these anti-social elements need to be tackled. She said that the government was sleeping when minorities were being targeted and has suddenly woken up due to the upcoming elections. Earlier, Modi had expressed his anger at the cow vigilantism and said that a few people had opened shops in the name of “gauraksha.” He requested state governments to prepare a dossier of such volunteers and cow protectors. He said these people are anti-social elements who have donned the mantle of cow protectors to hide their crimes. Noting that hundreds of cows die from consuming plastic, he said that those who feel concerned about cows should work towards stopping cows from consuming plastic.
His statements came at a time when the BJP government was receiving flak from the general public who had been troubled with the vigilantism in the name of cow protection. These self-righteous groups of men have been capturing and beating up meat traders and Dalits they found, accusing them cow slaughter.
