Parliament Winter Session 2021 Updates: Opposition parties on Thursday suspended for a day their dharna at Mahatma Gandhi statue inside Parliament complex against the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha MPs in view of the death of Chief of Defence staff Gen Bipin Rawat and 12 others in a chopper crash. Leaders of the parties, however, condemned the government for not allowing them to pay tribute to the top-most defence officer in the country inside Parliament after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed both the Houses about the Wednesday incident. Gender justice is an important commitment of the government, Law Minister Kiren Rijiu said in Lok Sabha on Thursday while noting that bringing a bill on women’s reservation needs careful consideration based on consensus among all political parties. He was responding to a question on whether the government has taken any step to hold consultation with major political parties and other stakeholders on the Women’s Reservation Bill to build consensus. DMK MP Kanimozhi on Thursday raised the issue of providing 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and asked the government when will a bill for this be brought in Parliament for its passage. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, the DMK member said it has been 25 years since a bill to reserve one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies was brought in Parliament “but nothing has happened so far”.
The Opposition and the BJP sparred on Thursday over the government’s move to extend the tenures of the directors of CBI and the ED up to a maximum of five years, with the Opposition alleging that it would completely undermine the autonomy of these institutions, and the ruling party defending the step as being necessary to fight large scale corruption. The Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2021, and the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2021, had been introduced in the Lok Sabha last week amid protest by the Opposition and came up for passage Thursday.
