According to the police, Farhat played an important role in the in espionage and provided documents to mission staffers which included Mehmood Akhtar.
The crime branch of the Delhi Police, which is probing the spy ring that has led to Pakistan High Commission has arrested a personal assistant of Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Munavvar Saleem for passing crucial documents to Pakistan mission staffers.
According to the police, Farhat played an important role in the in espionage and provided documents to mission staffers which included Mehmood Akhtar, whom the government declared persona non grata and ordered to leave the country. He was caught receiving classified papers last Wednesday.
A Delhi court on Saturday sent Farhat to ten day police custody. Speaking to reporters Munavvar Saleem, said he was not aware of such activities of his personal assistant and will extend all coperations to probing agencies. Adding that Farhat had also worked with four MPs before him, Munavvar Saleem said he would write to the Rajya Sabha secretariat to take away all facilities given to Farhat.
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Deepak Mishra said in Lucknow that Munavvar Saleem belongs to Madhya Pradesh and his PA had no connection with the party.
Farhat’s is the fourth arrest in the case. Police have already arrested Maulana Ramzan and Subhash Jangir, who are from Nagaur in Rajasthan, for passing some documents to Akhtar. Another accused Shoaib, was held in Jodhpur and brought to Delhi.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Singh Yadav said that Farhat has been arrested as had been involved in espionage for several years he is believed to have played an integral role.
