Controversy around Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed ‘Padmavati’ is refusing to die down. In the latest backlash to the film, Punjab CM has also joined the voice of Bharatiya Janata Party, Karni Sena, Princess Diya Kumari and Madhya Pradesh MP Shivraj Chouhan to stop public screening of the film as they claim that the film tries to distort the history of Chittorgarh and the Rajput community by putting ‘Rani Padmini’ in bad light. “Nobody will accept distortion of history and those who are protesting are rightly doing so”, says Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh. Chouhan said that queen Padmavati “is a true reflection of the Indian woman. We have been studying about the rare sacrifice and dedication of queen Padmavati since our childhood”. Chouhan also announced that a plan to erect a statue of queen Padmavati is likely to be carried out at a site where memorials of soldiers will also be constructed.
On Sunday, Suraj Pal Amu, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Haryana sparked a controversy when he announced a bounty of Rs 10 crore for the beheading of Deepika Padukone who portrays the character of Rani Padmavati in the film and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Meanwhile, The National Commission of Women has written to DGP Haryana requesting to look into the matter immediately and take appropriate action in accordance with the law. Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya also joined the chorus of protesters and he announced that he would not allow the film to be released unless the controversial parts of the film were not omitted. He even asked the I&B Ministry to seek action as the film may have ‘adverse effect’ on law and order in the state.
Padmavati is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali which Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in titular character. The film was slated to be released on December 1 but now, Viacom18, the production company has released a notification declaring postponement of the film.
