Hours after Deepika Padukone starrer Padmaavat was released across the country, makers of the movie Viacom 18 Motion Pictures on Thursday said that about one million people saw the film on its first day. In a statement, it also said that team was “humbled” by the response that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film. The film has been released in more than over 4,000 screens in the country. The period drama, finally released today after amidst protests that started in October last year, soon after the trailer was out.”We are humbled by the response we have received for Padmaavat. Over 1 million Indians have already watched the film and occupancy levels for shows are very strong across more than 4000 screens – with most running house-full. The feedback for the film has been overwhelming,” the spokesperson of the production house was quoted as saying by PTI.
Thanking the the government, state authorities, police and fans for making the first day of the release successful, producers also said as per the agency, “We are hopeful that every Indian – across all states -will get a chance to see the film especially as we celebrate our great nation’s 69th Republic Day.” Initial reports have suggested the good collection for the movie. A number of Rajput groups have alleged that the film not only distorts their history, but also defames queen Padmavati. Even as in Delhi, the occupancy was around 60 to 70 per cent for first show at 9 am, in Mumbai it was at 40-45 percent. With the long weekend coming up, trade analysts hope for a good business for the movie. “The response has been positive so far. We are hopeful it will increase during the day and in the evening,” Mumbai-based Nitin Datar, who is a member of the Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India, told the agency.

A number of moviegoers while condemning the violence by protestors since last few weeks, especially the stoning of a school bus in Gurgaon, said the movie had nothing objectionable. In some halls in cinema theatres like Satyam Cinema in the national capital, entire front row was occupied by uniformed security personnel. There were also bouncers in the hall. The film is a period drama based on 16th-century poet Malik Muhammad Padmaavat. While Deepika Padukone has played the role of Rani Padmavati in the film, it also features Shahid Kapoor as Maha Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin.
