Padma Awards: India’s finest, many unsung heroes honoured – from Illaiyaraaja to Sharda Sinha; check full list

Padma Awards 2018: The government of India on Thursday announced the Padma awards for this year. Padma Awards are considered to be one of the highest civilian Awards of India.

Padma Awards 2018: The government of India on Thursday announced the Padma awards for this year. Padma Awards are considered to be one of the highest civilian Awards of India. The awards are conferred in three categories: the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri. While Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan is for distinguished service of high order and the Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.

Padma Vibhushan in for excellence in Art:

  • Classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and ace music composer Ilaiyaraaja, 72, who is credited with integrating folk and western musical sensibilities into the South Indian musical mainstream.
  • Padma Bhushan for Hindustani classical musician and sitar player Arvind Parikh, and folk singer Sharda Sinha, whose version of the Chhath Puja themed song ‘Pahele Pahil Hum Kayeni Chhath’ is one of the most acclaimed songs of all time. Arvind Parikh is one of the greatest living sitarists of India with his career spanning over six decades.
  • Painter Laxman Pai has also been named for the Padma Bhushan.
  • Padma Shri for Sisir Purushottam Mishra, known for
    directing critically-acclaimed films such as “Bheegi Palkein”, “Samay Ki Dhara”, “Billoo Baadshaah”, “TADA” and “Aseema”.
  • Actor Manoj Joshi has also been named for Padma Shri.
  • Some other artistes in the Padma Shri list are Mohan Swaroop Bhatia, Doddarange Gowda, Ramli Bin Ibrahim, Vijay Kichlu, Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan, R Sathyanarayana, Ibrahim Sutar, Rudrapatnam Narayanaswamy Tharanathan and Rudrapatnam Narayanaswamy Thyagarajan.

Padma awards for foreigners

  • As many as 16 people persons under the category of foreigners, NRI, PIO, and OCI are among the Padma awards winners this year. They were:
  • Alexander Mikhailovich Kadakin – former Russian ambassador to India – has been awarded Padma Bhushan.
  • Sanduk Ruit – an eye surgeon from Nepal.
  • Nguyen Tien Thien – a badminton player from Vietnam.
  • Ved Prakash Nanda OCI (overseas citizenship of India), USA has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan.
  • Padma Shri winners: Jose Ma Joey of the Philippines; Ramli Bin Ibrahim of Malaysia; Bounlap Keokangna of Laos; Tommy Koh of Singapore; Hun Many of Cambodia; Nouf Marwaai of Saudi Arabia; Tomio Mizokami (Japan), Somdet Phra Maha (Thailand), Thant Myint–U (Myanmar), I Nyoman Nuarta (Indonesia), Malai Haji Abdullah Bin Malai Haji Othman (Brunei) and Habibullo Rajabov (Tajikistan).
