OROP suicide: Delhi Police has detained Rahul Gandhi yet again – the third time in 24 hours – at Jantar Mantar near Parliament Street in Delhi. The step was taken by the cops to prevent the Congress leader from marching to India Gate to take part in the One Rank One Pension (OROP) protest that has been going on over there. The OROP issue has grabbed the public’s attention after a former jawan committed suicide yesterday by consuming poison and this has led to a political slugfest between the Narendra Modi government and the opposition parties, with the Congress taking a leading position with its demand that the OROP scheme be implemented fully. The government on its part is saying just a few of the jawans are left uncovered and that too because of problems with banks rather than the scheme itself.

Rahul Gandhi had visited the family of the dead former jawan Ram Kishan Grewal today in Bhiwandi and also attended the funeral rites there. On his return in the evening, he was looking to reach the OROP protest spot when he was detained by the police. Gandhi was leading a candle light march organised by the Delhi Congress unit from Jantar Mantar to India Gate when police personnel restrained him and whisked him away on a van.

According to the cops, the Congress leader was detained for his own safety. A spokesperson said, “Due to security concerns, police escorted Rahul Gandhi away from the protest site.”

While Congress claims Gandhi was detained, Delhi Police has denied that allegation. Police say they have told Gandhi to go home. He was detained in his car on Firoz Shah road. Gandhi reacted by saying, “Mai toh yahan baitha rahunga, mujhe koi fark nahi padta..main khush hoon.” Thereafter, Rahul Gandhi was taken from Feroz Shah Road in a PCR van.

Congress leader says government must apologise to the family of the dead jawan over the OROP controversy. Gandhi said that this is a ‘murder of democracy’ and dared the police to arrest him.

Seing their leader being held, Congress workers staged a protest. Senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler said, “PM Modi ko koi farak nhi pada; unko itna jhatka laga ki wo jisko kuch nahi samajhte the aaj usne desh mei ek awaaz aisi utha di.”

Rahul Gandhi was finally released by Delhi Police from Tughlaq Road Police Station after 9 PM.

After being released from detention, Gandhi said,”Tried to give in a complaint in the police station, but the police said we can’t accept it. If they can’t accept the complaint of a MP, how will they accept the complaint of a poor person then? Yeh Modiji ka naya Hindustan hai.”
