PM Narendra Modi may announce the date of implementation of the One Rank-One Pension (OROP) scheme for defence personnel when he addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the Independence Day, sources said.
The long-pending OROP proposal, the modalities of which have been worked out by the defence ministry, is likely to be implemented latest by January 2016, sources said.
As of now, the date of retirement determines the pension amount for defence personnel. With each Pay Commission coming up with its recommendations hiking pay and allowances every 10 years, the military personnel who retire early, receive less pension as compared to those who retired later with the same rank and length of service.
Under the scheme being demanded by servicemen, a uniform pension would be paid to military personnel who retire with the same rank after serving for the same duration, irrespective of the date of retirement. Close to 22 lakh ex-servicemen and over six lakh war widows would be immediate beneficiaries of the scheme.
