Congress MLA Randeep Surjewala on Thursday condemned Union Minister VK Singh’s statement about ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal’s mental state. Grewal had committed suicide on Tuesday night at Janpath, allegedly over the issue of One Rank One Pension (OROP). Later, in the day, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia among others were first stopped from meeting the kin of the late ex-serviceman and then detained.

Surjewala, who seemed agitated at the detentions and Gen VK Singh’s statement said that the Narendra Modi government must apologise to the Indian armed forces and Ram Kishan Grewal’s family, who were also reportedly manhandled by the Delhi police. Speaking about the One Rank One Pension scheme, he said that if the scheme has at all been granted, then why were the soldiers protesting. He questioned the granting of OROP and said that PM Modi is lying.

Answering questions about the politicisation of the tragedy, he said that the Congress was prepared to do politics to protect the family of the late Ram Kishan Grewal and give them their rights. Earlier today, MoS KIren Rijju had condemned those protesting outside the RML hospital and said that it was not right to politicise the tragedy. Speaking of the police actions, he had said that it was not for the ministry to enquire whatever the police did at the local level.
