O Panneerselvam row: MK Stalin churns ‘SmileGate’ controversy, invokes Jayalalithaa to ‘shame’ Sasikala

Panneerselvam looked to counter the casting of any aspersions on his loyalty to Jayalithaa and AIADMK by saying that throughout his years with Jayalalithaa, whether in government or outside, he had 'done no wrongdoing'.

In the wake of caretaker Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam rebelling against AIADMK interim chief Sasikala, a strange little battle over a ‘smile’ has broken out between the two warring AIADMK factions in which opposition DMK leader MK Stalin has jumped in to hit out at Sasikala by invoking the name of the late Jayalalithaa. The ‘smile’ row was first started by Sasikala who wanted to prove that Panneerselvam had betrayed the party and that he had links with the opposition. To prove her point, Sasikala said, “In recent assembly session opposition leader and O Pannerselvam exchanged warmth, they were smiling at each other.” Clearly, in her eyes this amounted to anti-AIADMK party activities and Sasikala thereafter went on to say that she would get Panneerselvam removed from the party too.

However, Panneerselvam looked to counter the casting of any aspersions on his loyalty to Jayalithaa and AIADMK by saying that throughout his years with Jayalalithaa, whether in government or outside, he had ‘done no wrongdoing’. He added, “Looking at opposition leader and smiling at them isn’t a crime. I think smiling is not a crime at all.”

Considering that Jayalalithaa has been dragged into this so-called ‘SmileGate’, and the fact that there was some political mileage to be derived from the ongoing face-off within AIADMK, DMK leader MK Stalin took the side of Panneerselvam and revealed his own experience with the departed leader. Stalin said, “Shameful to say that smiling is an objectionable thing. Now, what will she say about the mess people are laughing on now?” He then proceeded to invoke Jayalalithaa’s name and said, “There have been times when Jayalalithaa inside assembly greeted me, smiled. Can Sasikala question this act of Jayalalithaa?”

So, instead of this becoming Panneerselvam’s ‘SmileGate’, the caretaker Tamil Nadu chief minister and Stalin have turned the tables on Sasikala.

However, while Stalin may be taking sides with Panneerselvam, he is also looking to get the AIADMK government that he leads dismissed and President’s rule imposed in the state. He said, “Tamil Nadu govt administration has collapsed in last 8 months, Governor must immediately come to Chennai to safeguard TN interests.”
