In one of the more intriguing reactions by DMK leader MK Stalin to the events unfolding in the AIADMK in the wake of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam attacked party chief Sasikala, who was expected to be sworn in as the next chief minister of the state on Wednesday, said that action must be taken against those who had targetted Panneerselvam. Sasikala Natarajan’s rival Sasikala Pushpa has also gone on record with her support to Panneerselvam and said that she hoped ‘they allow him to be made CM’.
However, Stalin called on the Tamil Nadu Governor to take charge of the situation before things deteriorate further in the state as the situation could well worsen quickly. This is especially feared as reports have appeared that says that Jayalalithaa was prescribed the wrong kind of medicines for her diabetes treatment hastening her end. “There is no proper govt in Tamil Nadu. The governor should come and resolve this issue. Action must be taken against all those who allegedly threatened CM to resign. Those who can threaten a CM, can threaten anybody tomorrow,” Stalin told his family-controlled Sun TV.
“Sasikala Natarajan didn’t allow CM O Panneerselvam to work freely, this is what DMK has been telling and same has been said by OPS,” added Stalin.
Panneerselvam in his attack on rival Sasikala for power in Tamil Nadu said that ever since Jayalalithaa had died on December 5, 2016, he was insulted time and again in an effort to undermine his chiefministership and make him quit the post. He said that his rivals were targetting him despite Jayalalithaa indicating that he was her real heir and no one else, not even her longtime aide Sasikala.
Explaining further to the gathered media at Marina Beach after he had visited Jaya’s memorial and sat there for 15-20 minutes in silence to meditate, he said that last Sunday he went to meet Sasikala at her Poes Garden residence attended by senior Ministers, MLAs, and party leaders, even though he had no inkling what it was all about. He said, “I was called to the meeting about which I did not even know. I went to Sasikala and they asked me to resign. They said I should resign to make Sasikala the CM. They said both the positions of party general secretary and the CM should be with one person.”
In another late night development, Panneerselvam got some welcome support from Jaya’s niece Deepa Jayakumar who said that she would stand by him in his fight against Sasikala.
