Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar today accused former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam of playing on the death of J Jayalalithaa for his political survival. On Panneerselvam’s doubts regarding Jayalalithaa’s treatment during her hospitalisation, Vijayabaskar said the expelled AIADMK leader was in the know of things when she was at Apollo Hospitals and had no suspicion about anything. “Everyday, at 11 in the morning, an elaborate briefing about Amma’s health and the kind of treatment she was receiving was given by the doctors, which Panneerselvam, Chief Secretary, Health Secretary and other government officials were well aware of,” he said in a statement here.
Vijayabaskar recalled that Panneerselvam used to welcome leaders, including BJP bigwigs Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and other VIPs, when they visited Apollo Hospitals where Jayalalithaa was admitted. Panneerselvam would accompany the Apollo Hospitals medical team led by its chief Dr Pratap Reddy when it would explain to the high profile visitors the treatment given to Jayalalithaa, the minister said.
“During that time, Panneerselvam did not raise even a single doubt or had any reservations about the treatment that was given to Amma. But today he is managing his political survival by playing on the demise of Amma,” he alleged. Panneerselvam, as Chief Minister, had recommended a probe into Jayalalithaa’s treatment and death before he was expelled from the AIADMK by its General Secretary VK Sasikala against whom he had revolted.
Last week, he had announced staging a hunger strike on March 8 to seek a probe into Jayalalithaa’s demise. Vijayabaskar said that as long as he was in power, Panneerselvam had no doubts about the treatment given to Jayalalithaa, “but soon after the deprivation of power, he became disoriented and started raising doubts about the treatment”.
“Panneerselvam’s contrasting attitudes, while in power and when out of it is indeed amazing to say the least. “When he was positioned at the Apollo Hospital, almost everyday on an hourly basis he was apprising the VIPs about the health status of Amma. When deprived of power, Panneerselvam is raising a storm on the treatment given to her. This clearly raises a lot of doubts about the veracity of his statements,” he added.
Citing Paneerselvam’s TV interview given following “deprivation” of power, Vijayabaskar said the former had “categorically stated that he had no doubt or suspicion with regard to the medical treatment that Amma received at the Apollo Hospital”. The Health Minister also recollected that a team of well- known international and domestic medical experts including British interventionist Dr Richard Beale had treated Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5.
