On a day when Rita Bahuguna Joshi joined the BJP, two of the eight Congress MLAs in Goa refused to attend a meeting called by the Congress vice-president.
Bad news for Rahul Gandhi is not ending. On a day when one of the biggest Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, joined the BJP, two of the eight Congress MLAs in Goa refused to attend a meeting called by the Congress vice-president.
The meeting was called to assess preparations for the coming assembly elections in the state. The MLAs who didn’t attend Rahul’s meeting were Pandurang Madkaikar and Vishwajit Rane, while another MLA Mauvin Godinho has already announced his decision to leave the party.
During the meeting, IE reports, some MLAs told Rahul that the Congress should forge an alliance, whereas many leaders, including PCC chief Luizinho Faleiro, wanted the party to go it alone. The Congress has decided that it would contest the elections alone. However, it is yet to be seen how the MLAs who wanted an alliance with the NCP will react to this decision.
Congress is also facing a financial crunch. To sort this out, the party had last year asked all its MPs, MLAs, former legislators, parliamentarians and officials to contribute at least Rs 1 lakh to the party.
However, IE reports that several leaders of the party are yet to comply. AICC treasurer Motilal Vora has reminded state Congress presidents and AICC general secretaries in charge of states several times, but without any result.
IE says Vora is now planning to write individual letters to the leaders in this regard.
