Former Union minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari was on Wednesday admitted to a private hospital in New Delhi after suffering a brain stroke, his son Rohit Shekhar Tiwari said. PTI sources at Saket’s Max Hospital said the condition of 91-year-old Tiwari, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and also of Uttarakhand, is serious and he is being kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Rohit said his father fell unconscious this morning while having tea at his house in Delhi.

Tiwari is the former Chief Minister of states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. He last made headlines when it was reported that he is all set to change his political loyalty. It was reported that Tiwari, a Congressman, was now seeking a BJP ticket for his son. Tiwari is now said to be living with his wife Ujjawala and son Rohit. However, Tiwari’s nephew, Manish Tiwari had expressed shock over the news reports of him joining BJP.

“I would like to inform everyone that the family is extremely disappointed. In fact shocked, at the developments regarding ND Tiwari,” Manish Tiwari, ND Tiwari’s nephew, had said in a statement. He added that their family was a “longstanding Congress family of freedom fighters and we have reason to believe that Tiwariji would never desert the Congress party on his own volition”. Alleging that the decision was being forced on him, Manish Tiwari had said: “We strongly believe that these decisions are being made for him, by others, keeping in mind their own interests and agendas. Either way, we members of the Tiwari family, do not endorse this move at all and see ourselves as eternally part of the Indian National Congress.”
