History and Significance
It was on January 25, 2011, that the celebration of National Voters’ Day began in an attempt to encourage more young voters to actively participate in the electoral process. The Union Government was back then led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who has approved a proposal of the law ministry to bring this day into effect. It was pointed out by the Former information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni that the young and new voters who have attained the age of 18 were less interested in involving in the electoral rolls.
This issue was addressed by the Election Commission which decided to launch an effort nationwide that identified all eligible young voters – who reached the age of 18 on January 1 of each year – in all polling stations across India. These voters would undergo enrollment and receive their Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) on January 25 annually.
