In July, Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma had suggested that PM Modi was the "best face" to promote the Incredible India campaign
Prime Minister Narendra Modi may become the face of ‘Incredible India’ campaign, according to a TV report. Earlier, it was speculated that Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan may be appointed the face of the campaign. However, the Central government had said in May that there was “no” proposal in this regard. In July, Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma had suggested that PM Modi was the “best face” to promote the campaign.
Sharma had argued that there was no need to appoint any celebrity as the face of the campaign as tourist inflow in the country had increased after Modi visited several countries across the world.”The perception about India has changed significantly in the last two years with Prime Minister Modi visiting a host of countries during the period. So, who else could be the better face for Indian tourism than our prime minister,” PTI had reported Sharma as saying. The minister had said that there was a spurt in the number of tourists from countries where Modi visited after becoming the PM. Sharma’s claim was also backed by a senior tourism ministry official who had said there was more tourist arrival from countries like the US, Germany, Fiji, Brazil, Australia, the UK, Canada and Myanmar.
Aaj Tak TV reported today that PM Modi will become the mascot of the campaign which tries to create a distinctive identity for the country. On several occasions PM Modi has appealed to people to promote tourism in the country. Will his official appointment as the face of the campaign will boost it or not, remains to be seen.
The Incredible India campaign has been without a brand ambassador since the contract of the agency, which had hired actor Aamir Khan for the job, was not renewed early this year. Aamir had invited strong criticism from BJP following his comments of perceived intolerance in the country in the run up to Assembly elections in Bihar last year.
