Mumbai rains: Here are are life-saving guidelines from NDMA

National Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday issued guidelines for Mumbai residents after the city faced heavy rains. A flood-like situation has been created in Mumbai, adjoining Navi Mumbai and Thane regions due to rains, creating disruptions in daily life. The rain havoc has caused delay of suburban train services and left vehicles crawling through water-logged roads in low-lying areas. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BMC officials have asked people to step out only if necessary. NDMA too issued a list of Dos and Dont’s for the residents via a Tweet. The central disaster management agency tweeted, “Do not drive through flood affected areas. Stay safe indoors as much as possible. Plan your travel. Help each other.”

Here are some must follow guidelines issued to residents of Mumbai by NDMC. The Dos issued by the agencies are as allows:

1) Turn off the gas and electricity connections; be alert for gas leaks.
2) Evacuate low lying areas and move to safer places
3) Drink boiled/chlorinated water
4) Stay away from sewerage, drains, gutters etc
5) Watch out for broken electric polls and fallen lines
6) Watch out for sharp debris

The Don’ts issued by NDMA


1) Don’t walk/Swim through flooded area.
2) Don’t drive through flooded area
3) Don’t eat food that has come in contact with flood water
4) Dont use electric material that is damaged
