Hours after a building in Mumbai collapsed resulting in the death of at least 16 persons and injuring 12 others, two days after torrential rain brought India’s financial capital to a standstill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives in a tweet. Taking to Twitter, PM Narendra Modi today said, “Collapse of a building in Mumbai is saddening. My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayers with the injured.”

Earlier, after visiting the site, state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said action will be taken in case of any negligence in the matter. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the family members of those who died in Bhendi Bazaar building collapse, ANI said.

A building, located near JJ Hospital, with 12 rooms and six warehouses on the ground floor, crumbled to the ground at around 8.30 AM. “Our priority is to pull out at the earliest those trapped under the rubble of the collapsed building. Once the rescue work gets over, the government will conduct a probe to ascertain the factors behind the building collapse. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty,” the industries minister Subhash Desai, was quoted as saying by the PTI.

The building was already marked for redevelopment purpose as it was in pitiable condition. Minister of State for Housing Ravindra Waikar who also visited the site said a probe will be conducted on the No Objection Certificates that were granted for redevelopment work to all cessed buildings in Mumbai. “An inquiry will be conducted not only about this building but also into the NOCs granted for redevelopment to all the cessed buildings, so that we can have an idea of the progress made in this direction,” Waikar was quoted to have said by PTI.
