Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder of Samajwadi Party and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, died on Monday morning. The Samajwadi Party patriarch was admitted to the ICU of Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital. The three-time Chief Minister was often called ‘Neta Ji’ by his party workers. His son Akhilesh Yadav took to Twitter to confirm the news.
Journey extraordinary
Mulayam Singh Yadav’s journey from a humble background to becoming Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh to Defence Minister at the Centre is what political dreams are made of. Yadav was born in a farming family in Uttar Pradesh’s Saifai on November 22, 1939. From Safai, the founder of Samajwadi Party rose to prominence with both regional and national importance. At the age of 28, Yadav was the youngest MLA elected in Uttar Pradesh in 1968. He was a three-time Chief Minister and 10 times MLA. For party workers, even when he was no longer the SP president – the mantle passed on to his son Akhilesh Yadav in 2017 – the patriarch remained “Netaji”, the leader. And his presence on the scene provided the glue that held the Yadav clan together, at least to a degree.
As leaders cutting across party lines pay tributes to the SP supremo, we at FE Online are here to bring you the latest development on this major news.

Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav had a close association with Kolkata and it was he who proposed that Jyoti Basu be made the Prime Minister of the United Front government in 1996. Basu, however, could not hold the top post as his party, the CPI(M), decided against it. The veteran Marxist later famously declared the party's decision not to be part of the United Front government as a 'historic blunder'. SP vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda, a close aide of Yadav who died on Monday, said, initially VP Singh's name had come up for prime ministership of the UF, a 13-party coalition. However, VP Singh rejected the offer to be the PM. After the party's disapproval, Basu suggested that Yadav be made the PM. “But unfortunately, for some reason, Mulayam Singh Yadav could not become the prime minister,” Nanda said, without elaborating. – PTI
