Punjab National Bank (PNB) detects $1.77 bn fraud
In what could be the biggest banking fraud in India, state-owned Punjab National Bank today said it has detected a USD 1.77 billion scam in which billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking from one of its branches for overseas credit from other Indian lenders. PNB has suspended 10 officers over the USD 1.77 billion (about Rs 11,400 crore) scam and referred the matter to CBI for investigation. Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar said this seems to be an isolated case and is not going to impact other lenders.
Case against Oru Adaar Love director on song ‘hurting religious sentiments’
Police have registered a case against the director of a forthcoming Malayalam film over a complaint that the lyrics of a song in “Oru Adaar Love” hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims. The complainants alleged that the song “Manikya Malaraya poovi” in the film written and directed by Omar Lulu had an “objectionable” reference to Prophet Muhammad’s wife. The complaint was filed at the Falaknuma police station here by businessman Zaheer Ali Khan, engineering student Muqeeth Khan and others.
AAP govt seeks more administrative control over Delhi on its third anniversary
On a day it turned three, the Arvind Kejriwal government sought more administrative control over Delhi to run it without the Centre’s “interference”, even though it is yet to fulfil key poll promises such as providing free Wi-Fi and installing CCTV cameras across the city.
