Speaking at an event at an Indira Gandhi memorial programme in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu, former finance minister P Chidambaram admitted that wrongdoing happened in the UPA regime, reported news channel Republic TV. “I am not denying that no wrongdoing happened. There is only one place where mistakes don’t happen, the place we finally reach,” Chidambaram was quoted saying by the channel in front of the Congress cadre on Sunday afternoon. However, the senior Congress leader also added that many positive things happened when Congress was ruling the country. “Many positive things happened during the 10 years of Congress rule,” he said.

Responding to these statements, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suryah told the channel these remarks have come out of fear. “All these statements being made by Chidarambam are out of panic and fear. This admission of wrongdoing is shocking,” Suryah was quoted as saying. He also added that it is alarming that such a senior leader has admitted to this. “It is alarming that he admitted to wrongdoing in the UPA regime in such a casual tone,” he said.

Meanwhile, another BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao said he is not surprised by these statements. “Chidambaram is not making a revelation. Everyone knows about the corrupt practices that took place under Congress govt,” he told the channel.Chidambaram was in the news earlier in this week, when CBI had filed a FIR against his son Karti on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct, reported news agency PTI.

Reacting to this, The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had later filed a money laundering case against Karti Chidambaram and others on Friday. However, Karti had maintained that his only link to INX Media, owned by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, was that his friend was its auditor. “A friend of mine is the auditor of that television company and it is the only connection I have with that firm,” he was quoted saying by the agency.
