DMK working president MK Stalin today tried to refute perceptions that his party was against Hindi. Speaking at function, to mark the 60th anniversary of his father and party leader M Karunanidhi as a legislature, Stalin said that had this been the case, Nitish Kumar and several other leaders from Hindi heartland would not have been invited, an ANI report said.
“If we had opposed Hindi, would we invite Nitish Kumar? Many leaders from Hindi heartland have come here, what does it show?”, he was quoted as saying at the function by the agency. Stalin also hit out at the Narendra Modi-led NDA Government saying it was trying to crush the Opposition. “This government is all out to crush opposition, that’s why we have gathered here”, he was quoted as saying by ANI.
Speaking earlier, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar expressed confidence that Stalin will lead the next government in the state and asked him to implement Karunanidhi’s promise on prohibition, a PTI report said.
He added that banning the liquor in Bihar had reaped great benefits including fall in cases of domestic violence and crime rate.
Earlier in the day, the Bihar chief minister called on the ailing Karunanidhi at his residence. The DMK chief could not attend the function because of health reasons.

Nitish Kumar further said he had recently come acrossan interview by Karunanidhi in which he had said that if prohibition was possible in Bihar, it could be also be done in Tamil Nadu.
A section of the poor in Bihar who earlier used to spend sizeable part of their income on liquor were now spending amount for their family’s welfare, he added, as per PTI.
The Bihar chief minister, while re eferring to other Opposition leaders on stage said this was evidence of Karunanidhi’s influence in national politics, the agency quoted him as saying further.
