Meerut Mayor Election Result 2017 Live Updates: BSP candidate Sunita Verma wins mayor seat

For the first time, the BJP released a separate manifesto for the civic polls in Uttar Pradesh which were held in three phases.

Meerut Municipal Corporation Nagar Nigam Elections, Mayor Poll Results 2017: The results of municipal corporation elections in Uttar Pradesh were declared today. BSP candidate Sunita Verma has won a tough battle with BJP candidate Kanta Kardam for mayoral post. Kardam is a former lawmaker and a Jatav Dalit and currently the state vice president of the party.  After BJP’s landslide victory in the UP civic polls, CM Yogi Adityanath said, “I would like to give credit of this win to all BJP workers who worked for the party to communicate its agenda of development to all. I would also like to thank all the voters.”

The of the city is known for being a manufacturing hub of cricket bats. Being close to Delhi, Meerut is a hub of economic activity.  On November 18, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath went to Meerut and addressed a rally. He was campaigning for civic body polls. However, he was shown black flags by some protesters who were then beaten by BJP workers and later detained by the police. During his address, the Chief Minister said his government had maintained law and order in the state during the past six months.

In the seats reserved for women in Scheduled Caste category. The BJP’s candidate for the mayoral post is Kanta Kardam and Congress’ candidate is Mamta Sood. The Samajwadi Party has fielded Dipu Manothiya for the mayoral post while the BSP has given the ticket to Sunita Verma who is the wife of former BSP MLA Yogesh Verma. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Neelam Rathod for the mayoral post. For the first time, the BJP released a separate manifesto for the civic polls which were held in three phases.

The issue of banning illegal slaughterhouses by Yogi Adityanath government is an important issue in this election.

Earlier in the day, Kanta Kardam- BJP’s mayoral candidate was leading. The trend changed over few hours and BSP candidate started leading with huge margin of 11000 votes. However, BJP mayor candidate Kamta Kardam made a comeback and started leading against BSP’s Sunita Verma. The final result of Meerut would be updated soon.
