The Congress is eyeing MCD elections to make a statement that Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand assembly polls results are things of the past and the party is capable of challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. To do that, the party will have to dethrone BJP- the incumbent party in civic bodies in the national capital, and the AAP led by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Congress has come up with a road-map to make Delhi the “cleanest and most beautiful” city in the world. The document, titled ‘Clean Delhi, Breathe Delhi — a draft road map for total sanitation solutions’ came after it has launched ‘chaat pe charche’- a programme to reach out to electorates.

“If the party wins, it will make the municipal corporations self-reliant in two years and develop Delhi as the cleanest and most beautiful city in the world,” Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said. The top priority after winning the MCD polls, Maken said, will be payment of dues, including Rs 1,563 crore arrears to sanitation workers and regularisation of temporary staff. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said, “The road-map will remain a mere dream if the three municipal corporations do not become financially self-sufficient in two years.” The former environment minister said when he raised the slogan “Pehle Shauchalaya Phir Devalaya” he was “mocked”, but now the Modi government is also aiming to make the country open defecation free. “The ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ by the Modi government is nothing but ‘Nirmal Bharat’ scheme launched by the Congress-led UPA government in 2011 which aimed at making the country open defecation free,” he claimed.

The party had earlier chalked out strategies to reach out to voters in the national capital. One such is ‘chaat pe charche’. The meetings will be held at eateries across the city, according to The Indian Express report. The move is clearly aimed at connecting with electorates and reaching out to them over chaat. It will be interesting to see whether the move will become a hit or not. Once a powerhouse in Delhi, Congress will apprise people about the achievements of the party when it was in power in the national capital. The move reminds us of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘chai pe charcha’ (conversation over tea) during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections campaign. Notably, The MCD polls will be held on April 22 and the results would come out on April 26.

Apart from this, Congress has roped in senior leader and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to be its “star campaigner” in the upcoming Delhi MCD polls as well as the Rajouri Garden Assembly by-election.

Amarinder, who led his party to an impressive victory in Punjab, will be felicitated by Delhi Congress on March 30. The event will be held in West Delhi, having a sizable Sikh population.
