Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah want to maintain the momentum it got after winning Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand polls. Shah is aiming resounding win in MCD elections to send out a strong message to Opposition parties, chiefly Congress and Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP. Shah has been attending hectic meetings and addressing in Delhi. Shah had held two meetings— one with all Delhi leaders, cadre and Union ministers and the other with the core team of Union ministers. Shah has underlined BJP should aim at defeating AAP after Kejriwal-led party failed to leave any mark in Punjab and Goa. He has also reiterated party’s stand that it won’t give any sitting Councillor or their family members ticket from any ward.

“The meeting also made it clear that no candidate would be allowed to jump wards. For example, anyone from A ward will not get ticket from B ward. Earlier, those who didn’t get ticket from one ward used their influence and gained a ticket from an adjoining ward. This has now been banned. So, a worker or candidate from A ward can contest only in A ward, it has been learnt,” The Indian Express report said.

Elections to 272 wards of north, east and south municipal corporations will be held on April 23 and the results will come out on April 25. While NDMC and SMDC have 104 seats each, EDMC has 64 seat. This will provide BJP a shot in the arm.

Apart from leaders of the state unit, Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Jitendra Singh, Sanjeev Balyan, Vijay Goel, Members of Parliament Ramesh Bidhuri, Pravesh Verma, Manoj Tiwari, Maheish Girri, Harshvardhan, Meenakshi Lekhi, Udit Raj, Pawan Sharma, Vijendra Gupta, Satish Upadhyay, Shyam Jaju and organisational secretary (BJP) Siddharthan were present at the meeting.

A few days ago, eyeing a hat-trick in Delhi civic polls, Shah had launched a blistering attack on the AAP alleging that corruption has flourished under the Kejriwal government and people must teach it a lesson.

Addressing BJP workers ahead of the MCD elections, Shah referred to party’s victories in the recent assembly polls and said a win the civic elections will help catapult the party to power in the national capital.

Pointing to an India map near the dais, Shah said while the country is being painted in “saffron”, Delhi continues to remain a “white spot” and asked the party workers to ensure BJP’s victory in the civic polls.

Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Nirmala Sitharaman, Jitendra Singh, Harsh Vardhan and Vijay Goel as well as Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari were present at the event. Shah also referred to the anti-terror surgical strike undertaken last year, saying the armed forces “barged” into Pakistan to avenge the killing of soldiers in Uri last year. Shah hailed the contribution of booth-level workers in the BJP’s spate of electoral success across the country.

He was addressing a convention of booth in-charges at the Ramlila Ground, where around 60,000 workers had gathered.
