Delhi MCD Election 2022 Highlights: Voter turnout recorded 50 per cent as polling concludes

Delhi MCD Election 2022 Voting Highlights: The polling percentage in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, for all 250 wards, stood at approximately 45 per cent till 4 PM, the State Election Commission said on Sunday. Till 2 PM, the voter turnout was recorded at 30 per cent. Voting for the 250 MCD wards began at 8 AM, and in about an hour it will conclude at 5:30 PM. The voting percentage in the 2017 MCD elections stood at 53 per cent. The MCD elections are largely seen as a contest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is eying its fourth consecutive term at the civic body, Congress and AAP.

A total of 1,349 candidates are in fray for the MCD polls, and over 1.45 crore electors are eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections. In another news, People of Katewara village in North West district of village said they have boycotted the MCD elections due to lack of basic amenities like proper roads, drains in the village, adding that till authorities heed to their grievance, they won’t vote. For the polls, authorities have set up 13,638 polling stations across Delhi, and 3,360 booths in 493 locations have been identified as “critical” or “sensitive.

MCD Election 2022 Live: Delhi’s rural areas turn up in large numbers

Grappling with issues such as waterlogging, poor roads and lack of education facilities, people in the rural areas of Delhi's Rohini and Badli turned up in large numbers on Sunday to vote in the Delhi municipal elections.

Waiting in a long queue outside a polling booth in Rohini sector 18, 86-year-old Shanti Devi told PTI that better drainage facilities and roads are needed in her locality.

“The main point is corruption should be rooted from the MCD. We need better facilities here. There are problems pertaining to potable water, broken roads and clogged drains. MCD officials often come and dig up the roads around without even thinking about the issues faced by residents because of this,” she alleged.

Somesh Puri, who also lives in the same area, said residents have to face knee-deep water on the roads every monsoon. He also claimed that water supplied to the households is often unfit for consumption. (PTI)

MCD Election 2022 Live: Violence-hit Jahangirpuri votes for peace, harmony and cleanliness

The residents of Northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri have cast their votes for peace, communal harmony and cleanliness in this Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.

The market area in Jahangirpuri which had come to a standstill in April due to clashes between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession was bustling on Sunday as people went out in large numbers to exercise their franchise.

The clash that erupted on April 16 left eight police personnel and a local resident injured.

Although the situation returned to normalcy months ago, the security in the market area was slightly beefed up with the deployment of police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel every 200 metres.

Tajman Bibi, one of the Jahangirpuri voters, said he wants the upcoming MCD regime to focus on peace and communal harmony, which are his primary concerns.

Another voter Rafiq echoed similar sentiments, saying that people in Jahangirpuri should not “face divisive politics” anymore. (PTI)

MCD Election 2022 Live: First-time voters bat for clean Delhi, better civic amenities

First-time voters batted for a spick and span Delhi with better civic amenities as they queued up for the MCD elections on Sunday. Of the 1.45 crore voters in Delhi, 95,0000 are first-time voters.

Coming out of a polling station set up at ITI Malviya Nagar, 18-year-old Namita said her vote was for cleanliness, better education, better parking facilities and against encroachment.

Kanishka Dagar (19) a political science student at Kirori Mal College, said he was inspired by his parents who diligently cast their votes in every election.

Maseera Fatima, a 19-year-old BTech student, said garbage is a huge issue in her Mata Sundari Road locality. Naman Kumar (19) expected the political parties to do more for the youth. (PTI)

MCD Election 2022 Live: Delhi’s civic body was established in 1958

Delhi got its legislative assembly on March 7, 1952 under the Government of Part C States Act, 1951 and Chaudhary Brahm Prakash became the first chief minister. Lots of infrastructural development happened during that time frame. Owing to the hub of power and other facilities, Delhi drew people from across the country that led to immense population pressure. It was then that the national capital felt the dire need of a full-fledged municipal corporation.The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was officially established on April 7, 1958 by an Act of Parliament.  

After the latest restructuring of MCD, the total number of wards has been reduced from 272 to 250. Of the total 250 wards, 42 seats are reserved for SC candidates, 21 for SC Women (SCW) candidates, and 104 seats are reserved for women candidates. Read more

MCD Election 2022 Live: Over 78 lakh male, 66 lakh female & 1,000 transgender voters in Delhi

As per State Election Commission's data, the total number of voters in Delhi is 1,45,05,358 out of which 78,93,418 are male, 66,10,879 female and 1,061 transgender persons.

According to a report by news agency PTI, authorities have set up 13,638 polling stations across Delhi. More than 3,300 booths in 493 locations have been identified as “critical” or “sensitive”, the data stated. Sixty-eight model polling stations and as many pink polling stations covering all assembly segments in the city have been established, poll officials said.

Being wheelchair bound or walking with crutches was not a deterrent for differently-abled Delhi residents who enthusiastically arrived at the polling booths on Sunday to make their vote count for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election.

This is the first civic election after the new delimitation process in which three Delhi corporations – NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC – have been re-unified into a single entity, into the MCD.
