In another example of employment crisis in the country, MBA, post-graduate and B-tech students had been seen applying for the contractual job of a sweeper in the Allahabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). And amid the scenario depicting the crisis of jobs for the graduates and post graduates, at least 1.10 lakh candidates had applied for the ‘safai Karmachari’ post, competing for the 250 vacant position left at the AMC.
With applications flooding for the contractual jobs, the complete proces of appointment would approximately take at least 408 days, while sources close to the Municipal Corporation had hinted that the recruitment might get further delayed if there is a change in the government after the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, next year.
Amid a chilling winter cold during early morning in the state, the applicants, as a part of the recruitment process, participated in a practical examination, which includes cleaning of drains, thereby evaluating the cleaning skills of the aspirants.
While candidates with high degrees apply for the contractual sweeper job, the minimum required qualification for the job is just the ability to read and write Hindi. The present vacancies for the job are of 119 at Allahabad and about 100 in each of the other districts of Uttar Pradesh. The salary for the contractual job had been Rs 17,000.
