Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar reacted today to a question by media about Rahul Gandhi taking over from Sonia Gandhi as the president of the Congress party. He said that only two people could become the next President of the Congress party. ANI quoted Aiyar saying, ”I think only two people can be Congress President, mother or son. Rahul already said he is ready to contest election.” However, he further said that for conducting an election 2 people are required and if there is no other candidate, then on what basis can the election take place. ” To contest election people are required, if there’s no one and there’s only one candidate how will you conduct election in first place?”

On October 4, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was the top choice of all workers and leaders for the post of party president, spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala had said. The Congress is currently conducting organisational polls, including for the post of president, according to PTI. “Rahul Gandhi continues to remain the unquestioned choice of every Congress leader and worker for being the president of the party,” Surjewala had said.

Surjewala had made the remarks while replying to a question on whether the party will welcome a situation in which a worker or a leader chooses to contest the top organisational post. Previous examples were also cited which suggests the party has been a witness to such contest in the past. The party also said that the question on Gandhi’s elevation as party President would be laid to rest in a month’s time, with the culmination of organisational polls, according to IANS.
