The Malayalam actress molestation case has grabbed the nation’s attention and shocked everyone. That such a crime can happen to a celebrity raises questions on an ordinary’s woman’s safety in God’s own country. But clearly, the ruling government is not keen to find the answers yet!

Angry questions were raised today against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today in the Kerala state assembly by Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan. Wondering what the reason is? It was reported earlier that Pinarayi Vijayan had ruled out the possibility of a conspiracy angle in this case despite the fact that the actress and those close to her in the film industry had stated the same. However, Pinarayi Vijajyan clarified later that he was citing news reports and not stating his opinion. But this was not enough to assuage the Opposition today.

Taking a jibe at both political leaders, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, “On several issues, both Chennithala and Kummanam are speaking out together in the same voice, using the same words ….how is it possible they use the same ideas and words in a debate?” To this, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala retorted, “We don’t need a certificate from Pinarayi Vijayan on this.”

“This case is being ‘white-washed’ by the Chief Minister himself, ” Ramesh Chennithala hit out in the assembly today. “Whoever it is, the police will not spare them. If it is a conspiracy, that too will be brought about,” Kerala CM replied. That the Chief Minister seems more concerned about Congress and BJP leaders raising similar questions in a case relating to the molestation of a Malayalam actress is a wake-up call of sorts for everyone, especially women.

Today’s debate was a good opportunity for Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan to highlight the ruling government’s stance on women’s safety or at least come out with some thoughts on some good initiatives that can be rolled out soon to strengthen their safety, but no – the Kerala Chief Minister mocked the Opposition instead – a smart move, in a way, when you have no answers to the hard-hitting questions that come your way.
