Senior Congress leader Makhan Lal Fotedar, who was a close aide of former prime minister India Gandhi as well as a Cabinet minister at the Centre, has passed away in Gurugram, Haryana, according to news agency ANI.

Fotedar was a close associate of former prime minister Indira Gandhi. He was also her political secretary from 1980 to 1984. Fotedar also served as Rajiv Gandhi’s political secretary for three years, before joining his cabinet, Indian Express said.

Apart from the Centre, he also served as a minister in the Jammu and Kashmir Government. Known as the Chanakya of Indian politics then, the 85-year old Fotedar was living in Gurugram along with his family, it added.

Expressing her condolences, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said, “In his long and active political career spanning over five decades, he tirelessly fought for the rights of people and served them with utmost integrity.”She also said that Fotedar was one of the guiding lights for the party and has left behind a void which can never be filled.

Condoling his death, senior Congress leader took to Twitter saying, “My deepest condolences on the passing away of Senior Congress Leader, Shri M L Fotedar ji. May his soul rest in peace”.

Fotedar also authored a book called ‘The Chinar Leaves’, said Indian Express.
