Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey will be appointed as the next Uttar Pradesh BJP president, ANI reported today. At present, Pandey is Minister of State in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. He was appointed to the post last year. The report comes amid an impending reshuffle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet at the Centre. It has been speculated that some of the non-per performing Union ministers may be removed, while some may be appointed as governors.

At present, the post of BJP chief in the state is being helmed by Keshav Prasad Maurya, who is also a Deputy CM in Yogi Adityanath government. During his recent visit to Lucknow, BJP national president Amit Shah had said that after a new state president is selected, Keshav Prasad Maurya will get to devote all his time to the state government, Indian Express reported.

Maurya is expected to be elected to the Legislative Council of Uttar Pradesh next month so that he can continue serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of UP.

Some of the names being speculated for the post of BJP chief in Uttar Pradesh included Swatantra Deo Singh, State Minister for Transport (independent charge) in UP, Ashok Kataria, BJP state general secretary, Jaswant Saini, state party vice-president, Union ministers Sanjeev Balyan and Mahesh Sharma.

However, Pandey’s name has come as a surprise to many.

Pandey is a Lok Sabha MP from Chandauli Constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Before being elected to 16th Loksabha, he had served as a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly during 1991-92 and 1996-2002. During his stint as Minister of State in Government of Uttar Pradesh between 1997 and 2002, Pandey handled Housing and Urban Development and later, Planning and Panchayati Raj portfolios as an independent charge.

In the Parliament, Pandey has been a member of Standing Committee on Rural Development and Consultative Committee for Ministry of Steel and Mines. He was also a member of Business Advisory Committee and Parliament Committee on Official Language.

Educated at the Banaras Hindu University, he has a doctorate in Hindi Language and has taken masters degree in Journalism as well.
