The ‘Mahabharat’ over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ramayana’ jibe against Congress Parliamentarian Renuka Chowdhury isn’t yet over. On Wednesday, Chowdhury was stung by the PM after she broke into a guffaw while Modi was saying that the concept of Aadhaar was originally introduced by LK Advani in 1998. Hearing her loud laughter, Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu disapproved her conduct and told her to see a doctor if there was a problem. Modi, however, requested Naidu not to stop Chowdhury and remarked he had heard such a laughter after a long time since Ramayana days.
Modi didn’t take names but his remarks triggered a flood of memes on social media and even Rijiju couldn’t stop himself from sharing one himself on Facebook.
The Upper House erupted after listening to Modi’s jibe. However, a furious Chowdhury termed PM’s comment as anti-women. Modi’s remarks were seen as a reference to a negative female character in the mythological serial. Chowdhury was stung further when Union minister Kiren Rijiju shared a post on Facebook that mocked her laughter in the Rajya Sabha over Modi’s speech.
Rijiju had shared the video clip from ‘Ramayana’ which was aired on television in the 1980s and early 1990s. The clip shows Surpanakha, sister of demon king Ravana cackling loudly. In another part of the video, there was a clip from the Rajya Sabha when PM remarked against Chowdhury.
The video clip has disappeared from Rijiju’s Facebook page.
The Congress MP has now put up a motion for breach of privilege against Rijiju for sharing the Facebook post. Congress leaders continue to protest against Modi on Thursday and also disrupted proceeding in the Upper House over Modi’s remarks.
The Congress also demanded an apology from Modi for “insulting” Chowdhury on Thursday. Chowdhury had also said that she would file a privilege motion against Union minister Kiren Rijiju. “This is highly objectionable and I am going to file for privilege,” she told reporters.
Congress leader Anand Sharma also attacked Rijiju said, what he “alluded to” was “shameful” and the Congress party condemns it. He said Rijiju has posted something “highly objectionable” on social media and Modi is silen. This is again not
only obnoxious, outrageous but condemnable.”
