Madhya Pradesh farmers protest: Expressing grief over the ongoing farmers’ protest in Madhya Pradesh and deaths of 6 persons in Mandsaur district, Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday released a list of demands that it has put before the Shivraj Chouhan-led government in the state. Apart from demanding the resignation of Chouhan earlier in the day, AAP has now asked the MP government to register a case against officials who opened fire on farmers. As the state is currently undergoing massive unrest over the farmers’ loan waiver agitation, not just AAP but other opposition parties including Congress is accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government of perpetrating violence against farmers.
Here’s the list of 5 demands made by AAP in connection with the Mandsaur incident:
i) Case to be registered against officials who opened fire on farmers and also against those who ordered the firing
ii) Loans of farmers should be waived off
iii) Report of Swaminathan Aayog should be implemented
iv) Farmers should get 24 hours electricity for irrigation
v) Like Delhi, MP government should give farmers Rs 50,000 compensation for crop losses
Earlier in the day, Gopal Rai who is AAP Madhya Pradesh in-charge said that the incident reflected anti-farmer mentality of the ruling BJP government who remembered farmers only during elections. Speaking to PTI, he said, “They have not been able to fulfil a single poll promise made during the elections.”
