The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to Kerala government and NIA, asking for a detailed report in connection with an alleged case of “Love Jihad”, according to ANI. Last month, a Muslim man had approached the apex court, challenging a High court order that scrapped his marriage with a Hindu woman, according to Hindustan Times. The High court had quashed the marriage, saying it was a case of love jihad, according to HT. The petition in the apex court was filed by 27-year-old Shafin Jahan, who claimed that the High Court decision was an “insult to the independence of woman in India.” Shafin further argued that his wife, who is 24 years old, did not convert to Islam for marrying him. His wife, Hadiya (present name) was earlier known as Akhila. She is a homeopathy doctor.

Love jihad is a term often used by right-wing Hindu groups to describe inter-faith marriages, which they claim is an Islamist conspiracy to convert Hindu women through marriage or coercion. Haris Beeran, Shafin’s lawyer had told HT that the Muslim man did not know Hadiya before marriage and he had responded to an advertisement for marriage posted by the woman. He added that the woman’s father had twice moved the high court against his daughter’s decision to convert. “Both the times, Hadiya tendered affidavits affirming she converted on her own volition and the HC accepted her stand,” he added.

Meanwhile, the high court had asked Kerala director general of police (DGP) to conduct an investigation into alleged cases of love jihad and probe incidents of forced conversion, saying “national interest is at stake.”
