Ahead of crucial general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly approached cricketer Harbhajan Singh to fight Lok Sabha polls from Amritsar. The BJP has long been looking for a strong candidate for this Parliamentary constituency. The Hindustan Times citing a senior BJP leader reported that the BJP was in touch with Harbhajan Singh. When contacted by the national daily, the cricketer did confirm that he was contacted by the party but nothing came of it. "I have not met any top BJP leader on the issue. I am not sure if this is the right time to join politics. Even if I make up my mind, there is very less time left to make preparations for the polls," the report quoted him as saying. The cricketer will be seen in action in the upcoming IPL 2019 where he will play his trade for defending champions Chennai Super Kings. If the BJP succeeds in bringing Singh on board, it will end the party's search for a strong candidate for the seat. Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu had won Amritsar seat for BJP in 2004 and 2009. In 2014, the BJP fielded Arun Jaitley who lost the seat to Amrinder Singh. The Congress is expected to field a local candidate on this seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Polling for Lok Sabha elections will be held in Punjab in a single phase on May 29 on 13 seats. In 2014, the BJP had won 2 seats, the Congress bagged 3 seats, Aam Aadami party and Shiromani Akali Dal won 4 seats each.
