After a 26-year-old dalit man died while in police custody under suspicious circumstances in Kanpur, several agitated locals took to the streets in an attempt to protest against the incident. During the protest, the locals started pelting stones at the police, vandalising their vehicles. Kamal Valmiki, who was arrested with the charges of robbery, was found dead in Ahirwan police station on Thursday. Kanpur SSP, Shalabh Mathut told ANI that a case has been registered under the SC/ST act and murder after the family members of the deceased filed an FIR. He also said that around 12 police personnel, including a station in-charge Yogendra Singh, who were present when the incident happened have been suspended. Blocking the Kanpur-Lucknow highway, members of the Valmiki community started protesting after which senior police officers controlled the situation.
After the brutal rape of the mother-daughter duo in the Bulandshahr gang-rape case and the Bareilly rape case, the law and order situation in the state of UP has come under the scanner. Only a few days old, the Bulandshahr rape case saw many political leaders from the opposition tutoring and blaming each other for the incident where a 37-year-old woman and her daughter were gang-raped for half an hour on a National Highway when they were on their way to Shahjahanpur in UP. A few days after the incident, a 19-year-old private school teacher in Bareilly was dragged into a car and raped by three men. With the upcoming assembly polls in the state, the following incidents in UP have highlighted the political fiasco and blame-game between the parties.
